The Time Is NOW!

“The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago. The next best time is today.” – Chinese Proverb.

Just how long do you plan to sit on that sorry ass of yours, and keep plotting your next move, one that you have been plotting for the past 3-4-5 years (or maybe even longer)??

What ‘move’ you ask? Don’t play dumb. You know what ‘move’ I am talking about. The ‘move’ to update your CV and start looking for that dream job, the ‘move’ to set the alarm for 5 AM everyday and go for a run, the ‘move’ to execute that business idea that has been sitting in your head for eternity and which you believe is your ticket to immortality.

No, you don’t need more time to fine tune your plans. Keep doing that, and guess what, the plan will never get finalized.

Trust me when I tell you – YOU ARE AS READY AS YOU WILL EVER BE!

Here’s what you got to do to break out of that rut and be on your way to an extraordinary life:

 1. Just Ship it!
 2. Get Started. NOW.
 3. No Excuses.
 4. Watch Your Company.

1. Just Ship It!

You know what made Steve Jobs a phenomenon? It was his single minded devotion to get his products to ‘ship’. Yes, he spent more time than anyone else obsessing about the finer details of his projects – be it the design, the colors, the functionality, but never did he do that beyond a point. That’s because he and his team worked on deadlines.

That is how Apple came out with the iPhone and that is how they keep coming up with newer more advanced models year on year.

I am sure you know the beauty of deadlines. Be it in your student life or in your professional life, you have always finished a task within the given deadline because there always was something at stake – your grades, your performance, your promotion, or your reputation itself. This ‘something’ is what motivated you, or scared you and made you get the job done.

Shouldn’t then there be a deadline for you to execute and ship your own dream project? I think you the know the answer.

“Can it get any worse than the current scenario where you have put your Dream Life on hold (or worse, maybe abandoned it) simply because you don’t have the time or the balls or the skills, to act on your plans?!”

Stop fooling yourself. You know you have it in you to do what it takes to make your dream a reality. I know you have it in you to do what it takes to make it a reality. No one else needs to know. High time you do something about your dream.

No you will never be able to launch that website if you keep working on making it just a bit better before its ready, or win a Mr. Olympia if you never participate until you feel you are ready, or win that contract if you keep thinking that your pitch needs just a little more tweaking before you can go out in the market, or get that girl if you feel you need just 1 more week to gather the courage to talk to her and you promise yourself that next week will be ‘THE’ week. And you will never be truly happy till you have earned your dream life.

Which brings me to the next point.

2. Get Started. NOW.

The way you keep thinking about that dream project without doing anything about it, it’d seem as if you are waiting for some divine intervention to come your way. But guess what, the divine intervention is waiting for you to get started.

“There’s a power, a magic in taking action. You feel divine energy coursing through your veins when you take that first step.”

It’s as if the whole universe spurs into helping you out the moment you decide to act. Out of nowhere, you will suddenly meet people who can help you with your project, you will find great deals coming your way from your favourite gym, the higher ups in your management will start noticing you, your inbox will start filling up with job opportunities you never knew existed.

This is the universe’s reward to you for getting off of your ass, trusting in your idea, and acting on it. Partake of it humbly but fully. The momentum has shifted in your favour and you should make the most of it.

Do you know how much time it took me to write this article? 45 minutes. But I had only decided the topic a minute before that. Even though not fully ready, I decided to start typing whatever came to my mind, and my fingers haven’t stopped typing for the last 30 minutes. and once I started, I didn’t stop, because it felt as if I knew my fingers knew what to type.

I agree, this article could have been better. But trust me, only by 10-20% or so, and that would have taken multiple iterations and many more hours(precious hours that I could rather use to watch another episode of Friends. Don’t worry; just messing with you).

The additional time I’d have spent fine tuning the article would absolutely not have been worth the finished product.

3. No Excuses.

It doesn’t matter what resources you have. Start with whatever you have and let the rest of the journey unfold. Don’t have money to buy a gym membership? Do body-weight exercises. Long office hours? Work after office, and on weekends. No Money? Get a job, and work on your project on the sides. Broke? Employ the ‘power of broke’, use your creativity and come up with ways to execute the project.

Do whatever it takes(no illegal stuff though).

“And never give excuses because excuses are for losers.”

Next time, you hear someone making an excuse, you know you are talking to a loser. Stay away from them. They are weak, and make you weak too. Which makes the next point the most important one.

4. Watch your company.

“Set your life on fire. Seek those who fan your flames.” – Rumi

It matters who (or what) you spend your time with. If you are like the 99% of people on this planet, you come home, and like to watch that new show on Netflix or TV, or hang out with your buddies after office bitching about your pathetic boss.

This is where the problem is.

There’s a saying – “Show me your friends and I will show you your future.”

Reflect closely as to who are the people you spend most of your time with. Are they the top performers of their respective fields, who don’t waste time gossiping, but instead are busy plotting their next killer deal. Who only stop when they have achieved what they set out to. And who know how to have fun (article here), because having fun is important.

Or is it a bunch of boring underachievers who can’t stop lamenting about how sad their life is and how they think it’s never gonna change? Who are experts at finding problems even before you have blurted out your dream idea. Who can quickly recount 100 ways why your plan will never take off.

If it’s the latter, you got to dispose of these people immediately even before you start work on your project. They have been holding you back, and it’s high time you all the brakes came off.

Coming to the ‘what’ of who/what do you spend your time with, do away with that favourite TV serial of yours. Yes, the one that you promise to just watch 1 episode of but end up spending 5 hours with daily, after you have watched a few YouTube videos just to get refreshed.

If I could give you a tip, it would be that don’t stop any such activity suddenly. Don’t go from 100 to 0 in an instant (unless you feel you are capable of it). Going ‘cold turkey’ is not recommended for everyone. Instead, limit your refreshment time (for e.g. serial watching) to 30 minutes (or 1 episode or whatever) until you are ready to eliminate it altogether.

Devote that freed up time to books – a man’s best friend, or to working out, or to running, and most importantly to your Dream Project.

Now, maybe you are an enlightened one and spend your time watching motivational YouTube videos or in elite company already. If that is the case, and you still find yourself reading this article, I strongly suggest you re-read the section titled ‘Get Started. Now’.

But why should you be doing all this, and doing it all right now?

“Because you know what’s the worse feeling in this world? Regret. Do you wish to live with the regret that you had a chance to take control of your life but you did not? Choose for yourself.”

Quick Recap:

You have what it takes to build a dream life. Instead of spending any more time fine tuning your idea, chewing it over and over again, and then convincing yourself that it’s not ready yet, do the following:

1. Just Ship it. Launch that product, start that service, write that book. And do the fine tuning later.

2. Get Started. Now. Don’t wait for a signal. Act now and new doors will keep opening up magically.

3. No Excuses. Remember – Excuses are for losers. Keep working with whatever you got and you will miraculously keep coming up with new ways to carry on.

4. Watch your company. Spend time with men of fortitude, who are successful, positive, encouraging,  go-getters, helpful, & like to take up challenges. How to find them? Simple, look for the top performers.

Until Next Time.
